Final Piece Preparation - Installation Artists
For my final piece, I have prepared by finding inspiration and ideas on how to present my work by looking at artists that present work in a way I plan to for my final piece.
The way I wish to present my work is as an installation in a room. I will present my work on every side of the wall to allow the viewer to be completely immersed in my work so they have the ability to also think about their own thoughts, feelings and emotions in songs they feel is important to you. I also feel as added immersion, the viewer should listen to their own song they find important using headphones so they can further think about their own whilst looking at the different subjects and getting to know them for their song choices and emotions that come from them.
There are multiple different artists that do installations that I plan to do for my final piece.
Mark Kessell - Untitled Specimen Box Installation Serial No. 28022
One of the artists I have looked into is Mark Kessel. Mark Kessel is an artist that specialises in daguerreotype (a photographic process that is a unique image on a silvered copper plate). He has exhibitions in many museums such as George Eastman House (Rochester, NY), International Center of Photography (New York, NY) and Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia, PA).
Mark Kessell states that his work often encourages his viewers to reflect on often who we are and how we understand one another. He does not provide any answers, but his work more often provides the stimuli for the imagination for the questions we all want to know.
I wish for my work to provide the same imagination and thinking for the viewers as Mark Kessell does. However, I want my questions to be:
- What song is important to me?
- What does that song remind me of? (memories)
- How does that song make me feel?
- Why?
I feel a layout similar to this would help me get my viewers to think of these questions and therefore I will use all the walls like Mark Kessell did. However, I will not use as many photographs and find a more planned composition in my work rather than covering the entire wall. This is because I want to emphasise my meaning through my composition and also not make the piece too chaotic. Due to having only 15 hours, covering the entire wall would also not be possible.
Suzan Shutan
Suzan Shutan is another artist of which does work in an installation of which I find has inspired me to look further into the composition for my final piece. Suzan Shutan works primarily in sculptural work, with her work ranging from the wall to the ground in the room. The sculptures of which seem uncontrolled with the composition they are in, but you can tell that the composition has been in fact well thought out without being laid out too neatly. The composition helps with the artist's meaning, which is to visualise an environment and its surround architecture that challenges the viewers perception and dimensions.
However, it is not her work as a whole that inspires me, it is the way the work is laid out specifically on the walls. The composition of the images together in all different sizes create a more interesting piece to look at, with them in different places on the wall which can help represent a meaning. Because of this, I plan to organise my photographs is a similar way on the wall so they are of both different sizes and different areas on the wall. I will use this composition to represent a certain meaning. In my case, my work focuses on primarily memories and music to trigger those memories. To plan, I will use one of these meanings to find a way to place my photographs on the wall.
With a combination of using the whole room as my canvas as well as keeping my composition related to my meaning, I feel it would be effective. This is because my piece will allow my viewer to become fully immersed in my piece while making it as obvious as I can as to what is important in my piece. To move forward, I will also experiment with different backgrounds to ensure that where I plan to place my piece will be effective in terms of immersion and contrast.
